End of year and promotion comments for report cards
Updated 24 October 2026
The Term III card often carries the decision parents care about most: is my child going up? Here are clear, kind comments for each case.
Promoted
[Name] has worked well this year and is promoted to [Next class]. Well done.
A good year, [Name]. Promoted to [Next class]. Keep reading every day over the holiday.
[Name] is promoted to [Next class]. Your [Best subject] results were excellent; give [Weakest subject] the same effort next year.
Promoted on trial
[Name] is promoted to [Next class] on trial. Steady work in [Weakest subject] will be needed in Term I.
Promoted on trial. We will review [Name]’s progress at mid-term next year. Please support revision at home.
Advised to repeat
Say it plainly and kindly, and invite the parent to talk:
[Name] has tried this year but needs more time to master the work of [Class]. We advise that [Name] repeats [Class]. Please see the class teacher.
We recommend another year in [Class] so that [Name] builds a strong foundation. Please come and discuss this with us.
Candidate classes (P.7, S.4, S.6)
[Name], you are ready. Keep revising past papers and rest well before the exams. We wish you success.
A strong year, [Name]. Stay focused in the final weeks and you will do well.
Leavers
It has been a pleasure to teach [Name]. We wish you every success in your next school.
Tips
- Decide promotion by the school’s written rule, not case by case on the card.
- Never surprise a parent with “repeat” on the card. Talk to them before the card goes home.
- Name the next class, so the decision is clear.
