How to combine BOT, MOT and EOT marks into a final mark
Updated 24 October 2026
Most schools set two or three exams a term: beginning of term (BOT), mid-term (MOT) and end of term (EOT). The report card needs one final mark per subject. Here is how to combine them.
Weights that add up to 100
Each exam gets a share of the final mark, and the shares always add up to 100. Common choices:
| Exams | BOT | MOT | EOT |
|---|---|---|---|
| End of term only | — | — | 100% |
| Mid-term and end of term | — | 40% | 60% |
| All three | 20% | 30% | 50% |
| All three, equal | 33% | 33% | 34% |
Worked example: 40% MOT and 60% EOT
A learner scored 75 in the English MOT and 80 in the EOT:
75 × 0.4 + 80 × 0.6 = 30 + 48 = 78
Worked example: 20%, 30% and 50%
A learner scored 70 at BOT, 76 at MOT and 82 at EOT:
70 × 0.2 + 76 × 0.3 + 82 × 0.5 = 14 + 22.8 + 41 = 77.8, rounded to 78
When a learner missed an exam
Decide this before the term starts, and use it for everyone:
- Show the final mark as missing until every exam is in. This is the strictest choice: nothing is guessed.
- Use the exams that are in, sharing out the weights between them. With equal weights, a learner with BOT 79 and MOT 65 and no EOT gets (79 + 65) ÷ 2 = 72.
Never count a missing exam as zero unless the learner truly scored zero. A learner who was sick on exam day should not look like one who failed.
Marks out of other numbers
If a test was out of 50 or 60, turn it into a percentage before combining: 42 out of 60 is 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70. Then use the weights as usual.
Rounding
Round final marks to whole numbers, the same way for every learner, before giving grades. Otherwise a mark of 89.5 can fall between two grade bands.

Set the weights once
In Report Card Studio you set your BOT, MOT and EOT shares and what happens when an exam is missing, once. Every final mark, grade and result follows. Free until you print.
